Alternative Therapy (What do YOU Think?)

May 12, 2010

Over time I have had many discussions with people on Alternative Therapies as I am a complete convert. Today this post as been written as so many of you have written asking some quite interesting questions which I just love reading, and hope this post sets you thinking. A lot more posts on Alternative Therapies will come out over time.

Alternative therapy encompasses a variety of disciplines that range from diet and exercise to mental conditioning and lifestyle changes. Alternative therapy and complimentary medicine mark the earliest and probably the most sustained efforts of humanity to combat diseases and ailments.

Alternative therapy (or alternative medication) is sometimes described as a non-conventional approach to healing, but alternative health therapies include things like energy healing, holistic therapy, massage, acupuncture, meditation, crystals, and many other approaches to health and wellbeing matters practiced by cultures who are still here today to tell the tale. After thousands of years of fruitful survival of these peoples including American Indians, Australian Aboriginals, The Chinese Empires, etc I would ask that You be the judge and consider history’s incontrovertible messages. Why? Because scientifically-validated practices have yet to be subjected to the ultimate test……………TIME.

Alternative/ Complementary

Alternative medicine means treatments that you use instead of standard ones. Alternative Therapy or Complementary Medicine (CAM) constitutes that stream of medicine which is prevalent in society but which is not recognized or authorized by the mainstream medical fraternity due to its want of scientific explanations.

Alternative therapies are traditionally those scientifically unproven therapies, which are used to treat pathological ailments that mainstream medical science is unable to treat. Research by Tindle,Davis, Phillips, & Eisenberg in the year 2005 have revealed that on an average seventy two million Americans have switched over to alternative therapies.

The times they are a changing, these treatments to mainstream medicine in the Western world has come of age in the new millennium and become more than just another answer to health problems, and practices include the use of herbal and vitamin supplements, meditation, massage, chiropractic, acupuncture, biofeedback, energy work, yoga, Ayurvedic medicine, and homeopathic treatment.

Alternative therapies are also much more focused on prevention which tends to get people more involved with their care. This adds up to hope for so many people, as alternative health therapies examine complaints holistically, healing and balancing the mind, body, and soul. . Complementary therapy usually serves to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life. They are intended to either complement Western medicine or as an alternative form of treatment, these therapies take a holistic approach to achieving a balanced body and typically will involve several modalities which differs from the isolated approach common in western medicine.

Massage also stimulates the nervous and digestive systems, and can relieve chronic pain and improve skin function. The term “massage therapy” covers a group of practices and techniques. Massage has the basic purpose of bringing about a relaxation of muscles, stimulating natural healing processes. Healing by touch is based on the idea that illness or injury located in one area of the body can affect all parts of the body.

Acupuncture is often used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for the treatment of insomnia. It involves the insertion of extremely fine needles into pressure points at clearly defined locations on the skin claimed to be energy points in order to improve the balance and flow of factors referred to as Yin, Yang, Qi and Blood. . Acupuncture is among the oldest forms of healing practice in the world, and is said to stimulate the body’s immune and healing systems.

Herbal Remedies have been around as long as human kind. These, and folk medicines are those treatments for illness and injury that have been passed down from one family to the next over many generations, and are still in daily use amongst indigenous peoples around the world. Also, treatments involving essential oil etc, are growing in popularity amongst western cultures in the form of Aromatherapy blends.

Researchers are working to better understand the value and benefit of complementary medicine in breast cancer, and just about anything else that ails you Researching alternative health therapies online can be most helpful in finding the treatment which will help your condition. Research on the internet can open up a world of possibilities and potential cures.

Alternative health therapies have the capacity for providing better health, improving the quality of life, giving a sense of well-being and imparting an overall sense of control over oneself. All of these practices come with a guarantee of having been tried by many, many times before. If they didn’t work would they have survived this long?
The final question could be, what else is out there that has been lost over time? What could be waiting to be rediscovered?
